Italy’s leading international B2B gaming event First Playable goes digital this July

Italian Video Game Awards joins digital line-up for 2020

Thursday 21st May, 2020: Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association (IIDEA) is excited to announce that the second-ever edition of First Playable - Italy’s leading international B2B gaming event - will take place in digital form this July.

Building on last year’s debut First Playable - which saw seventy Italian developers, thirty-six international speakers and publishers come together across numerous sessions and showcases - IIDEA has decided to transition the event into a digital-only one in response to the current  COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the Italian Video Game Awards 2020 will also go digital-only, serving as the highlight of this year’s First Playable, which will run online for two days between 15 and 16 July 2020. The event will take place in the spirit of 2020, meaning it will be a safe, intimate, and curated experience for all the attendees and speakers.

The Toscana Film Commission and Regione Toscana will support the event, and technical partner, MeToMatch, has been chosen to produce First Playable 2020.

First Playable 2020 will serve as a showcase for the Italian video games industry, both highlighting the learnings of the country’s leading studios and acting as a bridge to their peers across Europe and, indeed, the wider world.

As well as the IVGA ceremony on night one, IIDEA can also reveal it has partnered with the Toscana Film Commission to send a package of Italian food and wine to participating international publishers and journalists, helping them capture a slice of Italy’s world-famous hospitality directly in their homes.

Stefania Ippoliti, General Manager of Toscana Film Commission comments, “We firmly believe in the Italian videogames sector, so despite the challenges and complications posed by the current health emergency, we are delighted to provide our support to First Playable in tandem with Regione Toscana.  - this will be its second year and this reimagined online edition will be produced from the Manifatture Digitali Cinema di Pisa. Thanks to digital technologies we will aim to reproduce the beauty and creativity of Pisa and Tuscany and bring a unique Italian feel to this great event.”

Thalita Malago, General Secretary at IIDEA adds, “It was really important to us to ensure that, even with the events impacting world right now, we built on the momentum we’d seen with First Playable in 2019 and offered a way for Italian studios and developers across the globe to come together and share ideas as they did in Pisa in 2019.”

“We also wanted to make sure the Italian Video Game Awards made a return in 2020, and so we’re working with our technical partners to ensure both First Playable and the IVGAs make a successful transition to the digital arena this July.”

First Playable 2020 will feature:

  • Streaming of post-mortem talks by selected Italian game developers
  • Streaming of the Italian Video Game Awards’ (IVGA) ceremony
  • An opportunity for Italian developers to take part in both a  digital collective pitch and a one on one pitching session to international publishers
  • A partnership with the Tuscany Film Commission to send a package of Italian food and wine to participating international publishers and journalists at their home

The IVGAs itself will operate as a 30-minute broadcast, casting a light on the best of the Italian development talent with the awards themselves decided by an international panel of respected luminaries from across the games industry (to be announced at a later date).

IIDEA has chosen MeetToMatch as their partner to produce the First Playable event on their behalf.

Fedor van Herpen, Co-founder and director of partnership at MeetToMatch says, “MeetToMatch is very happy to be able to support the Italian game developers community with this cooperation with IIDEA. We are very much looking forward to bringing in international publishers and investors and facilitating deal-making on the virtual doorsteps of Italian industry members.”
